The Akita or Akita Inu (秋田 犬?) (Translated as 'Akita dog'), is a canine breed native to Japan, named for the Akita prefecture. At the beginning it was a big game dog and for generations it was used by the warriors of Japan as a defense and attack dog, and also to hunt bears. It is considered a race apart from the American Akita.
There is evidence of the appearance of Akita inu as a pure race for more than 3,000 years, although due to the isolation of its hometown, its history is a big question. Akita Inu has received several names throughout history; according to the role he would play would be Matagi-inu (hunting dog), Kurae-inu (war dog) and Odate-inu (providence dog). This breed was used for bear hunting, as it was medium sized. However, from 1603 it began to be used as a fighting dog, and, looking for a larger and more aggressive breed, it crossed the Akita inu with the Tosa Inu or the English Mastiff which made the pure breed of the Akita inu endangered and many of the characteristics of Spitz-type dogs disappear from it.
